About Sung Im Her

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Sung Im Her obtained a master’s degree in contemporary dance at Han-Sung University, worked with Ji-Gu dance theatre for six years and then moved to Brussels to study at P.A.R.T.S. (2004-2006). In 2006 and 2008 she worked with Jan Fabre/Troubleyn for the solo Quando l’uomo principale e une donna and the group work Je suis Sang. She joined Les ballets C de la B in 2008 to collaborate on and perform in Ashes. In 2009 Sung Im Her first collaborated with Needcompany for This door is too small (for a bear). Since then she collaborated as dancer, choreographer and choreographic director in many creations for both Grace Ellen Barkey and Jan Lauwers: The House of our Fathers (2010), Marketplace76 (2012), Mush-Room (2013), Odd but True (2013) and more.

In 2011, she joined physical theatre company Abattoir Fermé as performer on Monkey and later BUKO (2016) and Hotel Poseidon (2019). In 2016, she moved to London and was selected for Testbeds Catalyst, a year-long programme for mid-career artists. She developed ideas around global citizenship, borders and home. Her solo You Are Okay! (2017) includes live illustrations by So-mang Lee and attracted co-production support in Belgium, Korea, UK and Germany. In 2018 she was commissioned by Counterpoint Arts to create the site-specific work Human Wall for Refugee Week at the V&A Museum in London. Since then she developed two new works: NUTCRUSHER and W.A.Y, both commissioned by the Korean Arts Council and premiering in Seoul at the ARKO theatre in January and September 2019 respectively.
