Fridays 2, 9 June 2023 | 12-1.30pm
JULIE LOCKETT is an independent dance artist based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Co. Tipperary – a lived response to the climate crisis. Julie co-founded and directed Genesis Project & Collective with Ella Clarke, a practice-based project for radicalisation in the art form of dance. Her work is influenced by eminent US choreographer Deborah Hay.
With a career spanning more than 20 years, her most recent works include her solo ‘Her-acre’ directed by Jason Byrne supported by the Arts Council and Dance Ireland and various collaborations with Instant Dissidence: One Last Dance and …As If Trying Not To Own The Earth, live streamed as part of Dublin Dance Festival 2021. Last Spring, thanks to an Eadrainn/Between Us Residency hosted by Dance Ireland and Dance Base she started creating her new solo ‘Carrier’.
Julie trained at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, Cork, has a BA (Hons) in Dance Performance from Middlesex University, a BA in Modern Languages & International Relations from John Moore University and has completed a Permaculture Design Course.
What if there’s no rush? Don’t wait for anything
Julie’s workshops will begin with a short yoga-influenced warm-up. We will then tune into the body in order to create an acute and expansive experience of our bodies in the studio. These exercises will be influenced by the work of Deborah Hay.
Posing ourselves the question ‘what if there’s no rush?’ we will dig into our bodies for writings which can be used as material for our dance work. We’ll stay tethered to our notebooks, frequently switching between dancing and writing. We will also discuss approaches for using our writings in our dance work.
