M.A.D. Limerick

Co-curated by Alexandra Vostokova and Grace Cuny in partnership with Dance Limerick

Alexandra Vostokova and collaborator Grace Cuny will be in residence in Dance Limerick as part of Alexandra’s Arts Council of Ireland Bursary Award.

With a focus on dance and music improvisation in performance, the research residency will culminate in an evening event in partnership with Dance Limerick providing artists with opportunities to move and improvise together.

M.A.D. Limerick invites you to participate in an improvisational jam incorporating music, movement, and drawing. We will provide a series of prompts to guide participants through the evening, but everyone is free to choose their layer of participation at any point, including simply observing. Music will be provided by a set group of musicians, with opportunities for other participants to also add to the soundscape if desired. We encourage people to arrive at the start of the event as we will begin with a short meditation practice, after which the evening will progress in stages.

Questions:

I’m not a dancer, can I attend?

Absolutely! This event is for everyone, including practicing artists of all disciplines and enthusiastic newcomers. Just bring an open mind!

I’m a musician, can I play music?

For this jam, improvised movement is the main form of participation, but there will be occasional opportunities to improvise with small provided instruments if desired. We will have a set musical group playing throughout the evening to create a cohesive atmosphere.

Do I have to move the whole time?

No, everyone is free to participate for as long as they like. The center of the room will be a designated dance space, with areas on the perimeter set up for people to observe, draw, write, and take snack breaks.

What if I can’t make the whole thing?

We’ve structured the event in stages to create a comfortable environment which supports people to ultimately let loose. We encourage people to attend from the start of the jam, especially if this is your first time improvising, to get the most out of the experience. But of course, if you can’t make the start we would still love to have you!

Open to everyone—no prior experience is necessary. Just bring yourself, your friends, and an open mind. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact gcunydance@aol.com
