CHALK: THEO CLINKARD

“I recently found out that the reason that chalk is white is because it is formed out of the minute skeletons of marine life, compressed over billions of years… You could essentially say it’s made of bone”…

Choreographer, performer and theatre designer Theo Clinkard uses the iconic cliffs of the south coast of England as a point of departure in CHALK, his stark and poetic duet, with a live score performed by composer James Keane.

Through a series of physical and aural explorations, they encourage us to observe the space between that which is ‘other’, and that which we recognise deeply within ourselves.

About Theo Clinkard…
Theo is a Cornish born, Brighton-based choreographer, performer and theatre designer. Since graduating from The Rambert School, he has spent almost 20 years performing internationally in work by some of the UK’s most celebrated choreographers, including Matthew Bourne, Siobhan Davie and Wayne McGregor.

In 2012 he formed his own company to develop a portfolio of eloquent and visually arresting works that explore the communicative potential of the body and the empathetic nature of dance in performance. His inaugural company work, “Ordinary Courage” (The Observer ****) toured to 21 venues across England, Scotland and Chile and was invited to be part of British Dance Edition 2014.

“Chalk”, was conceived for unconventional spaces and has been performed in spaces as diverse as an art deco hall, a school gym, an old fruit market, a glass room, a studio and a maltings.

Theo has also created 12 commissioned works for professional companies and conservatoires in the UK, New Zealand, Ireland (Chrysalis Dance in Galway) and Austria.

Alongside his choreographic work he leads company classes for Pina Bausch, Culberg Ballet, DV8, Carte Blanche, Sydney Dance Company, Rambert, Scottish Dance Theatre, Danish Dance Theatre, Skanes Dansteater, Random Dance, Michael Clark, Phoenix, New Adventures, Candoco and Chunky Move.

Theo is a Resident Artist at Greenwich Dance and Associate Artist at Dance4.

Praise for Theo Clinkard’s previous work:
“Nuanced and powerful…”
“Clinkard’s movement language is deceptive, its apparent simplicity that of well-written dialogue…”
“A highly painterly dance maker…”
