Step Up Dance Programme 2019 brings a new outlook and continues to bridge the gap between dance education and professional contemporary dance practice in Ireland. Step Up is curated by Irish born, Marguerite Donlon, International choreographer and Director of “Donlon Dance Collective”, based in Berlin.
This year’s programme combines creating three brand new works with International choreographers, working on specific technical skills, from a renowned improvisation teacher, learning repertoire from one of the greatest masters in dance, personal coaching, followed by performances in three cities, by the six selected dancers who have completed their professional training within the last three years. Step Up will enhance young dancers’ professional networks by connecting them to the Irish and international contemporary dance community, thereby improving their professional opportunities for young dancers in Ireland and abroad.

Reiner Behr, is a long time dancer with Pina Bausch. Participants will learn repertoire choreography as well as the philosophy and deeper meaning of each movement handed down to Reiner directly from Pina Bausch. Further information HERE
Eoin Mac Donncha. Ballet master and Rehearsal Director (Ireland)
Eoin trained at The Rambert School of Ballet in London before working at various state theatres in Germany including Stadtheater Giessen and Staatstheter Saarbrucken. He has worked with the Cathy Sharp Dance Company, Switzerland, the Expressions Dance Company, Australia, and has danced for Ballet Hagen under the direction of renown choreographers including Wayne McGreggor. Currently, he works as a soloist in Budapest with choreographer Pál Frenák. Eoin has taught at the Hong Kong academy of performing arts in Hong Kong, and has set a piece for the students of the graduating year there. Eoin will teach morning class and will assist the choreographers and rehearse the new works. He will be in the studio at all times, to assist with artistic matters.
Independent dance artists are required to initiate their own opportunities, to manage their career paths and often their own projects. The Personal Development aspect of the Step Up programme aims to give participants a broad toolkit or road map for taking the next steps in their career path. Activities will include

Timeframe / Key Dates
The full rehearsal / performance period runs from Monday 24 June– Saturday 31 August, using state of the art studios and facilities at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at UL initially, and then at Dance Limerick, before performing in Limerick, Cork and Dublin.
Terms & Conditions
• Rehearsals will take place 10.00 – 6.00 pm Monday to Saturday for the duration of the rehearsal period. Some additional hours in the evening may be required, as the discretion of the choreographers.
• Accommodation will be provided for the first part of rehearsals on campus at UL, and subsequently in artist-friendly houses in the city for the second period of rehearsals
• Tour accommodation and tour travel as required, will be arranged and paid for by Step Up.
• A small weekly stipend will be paid toward day to day living costs
• Participants must be available on an exclusive basis for the full programme.
We are seeking applications from exceptional young dancers who will graduate before mid-June 2019 or who have graduated from professional level dance training within the past three years.

With Light Moves 2018 festival activities wrapped up for another year, Limerick Dance Artist in Residence Mary Wycherley will be back in the studio throughout Spring opening up ideas for a new work entitled Weathering. Commencing a new phase of work is always exciting and Mary will be joined by Dancers Magdelana Hylak, Lucia Kickham and Sarah Ryan in Dance Limerick during this process. With time to dig in and further develop the questions for mixed media performance explored in 2018, Mary will now be introducing questions and practices that bring together dance ensemble, video and human voice.
Mary will continue her Open Futures programme introduced in 2016 in providing mentorship and support for local dance artists. In February she is delighted to work again with choreographer and performer Rosalind Crisp who is back in Limerick for a residency.

The Aerowaves Springback Academy will once again offer aspiring dance writers the chance to be mentored in the fundamentals of quality dance criticism in the action-packed environment of Spring Forward, Aerowaves annual festival which will be hosted by La Briqueterie CDNC du Val-de-Marne near Paris from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 April 2019.
Aerowaves are now looking for up to 10 opinionated people with an interest in, or some prior experience of writing about dance. The participants will be mentored in critical writing by our lead critics including Donald Hutera (The Times), Sanjoy Roy (The Guardian), Kelly Apter (The Scotsman) and Laura Cappelle (New York Times).
Under the guidance of four experienced dance writers, participants have the chance to create, shape and share conversations about dance and hone their critical writing skills for a number of different formats. It's a fast-track way to gain experience and technique in responsible, effective, attractive dance criticism as well as to explore and understand the opportunities that digital publishing has to offer.
PLUS Earlier this year Springback Magazine was launched. The publication’s contributors are drawn exclusively from writers who have participated in the Springback Academy programme and who are part of the ever-growing community of Springback Academy ‘graduate’ writers.

Limerick dance artist-in-residence Mary Wycherley presents the final 2 performances of her 2018 tour Invisible Histories in Cork and Derry in the coming weeks.
From the beginning, the work developed in close collaboration with the commissioned artists – sculptor Rory Tangney and sound artist La Cosa Preziosa – in responding to the question of how these art forms might coexist with live dance performance and in turn how the qualities of the gallery itself creates unique opportunities for movement, objects and relationships to time, space and audience.

Dance Ireland and Step Up Dance Project present a workshop for young emerging dancers on the topic of representing yourself professionally online and to dance companies, programmers and funders.
The subject matter will include:
- Developing an appropriate digital fingerprint (Email, Social Media, Online Presence)
- Making video samples, the dos and don’ts
- Introducing yourself and your dance practice
- Writing about your work for a bursary or funding application
- Drawing up a simple budget in excel
The day will be led by Aideen Gohery (former dancer) and Niamh O’Donnell, Director, Mermaid Arts Centre, with support from Jeanette Keane (Dance Ireland) and Jenny Traynor (Dance Limerick).
AIDEEN GOHERY - BIOGRAPHY
Aideen Gohery began her professional career with Dublin City Ballet and subsequently appeared in numerous stage productions, film and TV roles and advertising. Aideen is a founder member of CoisCéim Dance Theatre and has also served on the boards of the Association of Professional Dancers in Ireland and Irish Equity.
More recently, Aideen has focused on developing a thriving social media consultancy enterprise and engages with a diverse range of clients across the hospitality, restaurant, retail and entertainment sectors. Aideen brings a unique perspective to the world of social media and professional dance as her many years of experience in both realms combine to deliver unrivalled and unique insights.
NIAMH O’DONNELL - BIOGRAPHY
Niamh O’Donnell is Artistic Director of Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Co Wicklow. The centre presents a multiple art form programme of Irish and international visual arts, dance, theatre, music and art-house cinema. The centre commissions and co-produces work as well as supporting and platforming local artists and arts groups engaging and serving a population of 115,000 people.
Niamh has worked across disciplines initially in the Gallery of Photography (1990), then on the re-establishment of Black Church Print Studio, an artist resource organisation (1994), followed by a position as Artistic Programme Coordinator in ArtHouse Multi-media Centre (1999) where she co-ordinated the sound and media residencies and the exhibitions programme. Niamh worked as General Manager in Project Arts Centre for 13 years where she was responsible for the financial and general management of the centre, as well as working as Executive Producer on the artist development programme, PROJECT CATALYST where she produced the work of individual artists, across disciplines, working outside the standard model of production, both in the centre as well as touring nationally and internationally.

Our Dance Clubs introduce the excitement and wonder of dance to young people through movement, creativity, learning and play.
The clubs aim to develop a dancer's ability with skills and technique while nurturing the creative possibilities within every young person. We believe dance provides both physical and intellectual benefits, that will enrich the lives of our students. Young people are encouraged to use their imagination to express their own individuality and develop their creativity, while also building confidence, self esteem and fitness.
These fun and active classes are led by our experienced tutors who teach modern dance styles to pop music and lots of familiar hits.

As part of this residency at Dance Limerick I gave a series of workshops to mothers in the studio exploring the skills and abilities which we have acquired through our continuing development into mothers and how we may frame these skills in a positive and valuable way.
My artistic interest lies in an embodied practice which draws together voice and movement, society, stories and health. Since I got pregnant and became a mother I have been intrigued by the ongoing changes which occur in my body; Neural re-modelling and how our ceaseless movement can be perceived as a continuum from the cellular to the social and from the individual to the cosmic. Is what happens inside my body mirrored in society? Should it be?
I’m trying to find ways through my practice to explore Bracha Ettingers Matrixial theory which aims to rethink the masculine-feminine opposition, the matrixial gaze which is like a moment we share before meaning forms “a dimension of emergence, where objects, images, and meanings are glimpsed in their incipiency, before they are differentiated’.
I have been investigating male microchimerism in the female brain: the migration of fetal cells through the placenta during pregnancy. These cells engraft maternal tissues and, eventually, become her. Once they infiltrate the host they differentiate, replicate and proliferate. How could this affect the mothers health, decision making and powers? Nature at work.
Identity then becomes a new question for me. What is m/other? An infinity of engaged systems. Mutation. Alien cells colonizing my body to what effect? Ebbing and flowing. Forming and unforming and reforming. You suck me in, I pushed you out.
Interdimensional travel; Another other sense, extra feminine difference, the waves of breath, the vast and inter-dependent multiplicity of the sea. The matrix is the place from where things grow. Ideas, concepts, humans. Buoyancy, support and connectedness.
I left my centre behind, it had been so full and so rooted. After giving birth to the I-that-is-not-I, I forgot about my belly. No, I loathed it. It felt less than, watery, scarred, abandoned, an empty warehouse…. Some dysfunctional appearance of the belly breeding an exhausted, negligence of myself. So I aim to reconnect with my centre by dismantling the perceptions which have been allowed to infiltrate my sense of “I”. Revaluing my skills even against a consumerist background, in parallel, working with and allowing new connections to grow. I seek support from appropriate places and I nurture a support-seeking society. I meet the mothers and we focus our powers.
I am placing the maternal as-a-state-of-being in the world at the centre of my quest. There are cells from my daughters fathers family living in my body, becoming me, nature is always at work. What kind of world could evolve if we prioritise the powers of the origin?
To me it feels like organs moving over each
and for each other.
A liquid breath which has an oozing quality, spreading through the layers of the body.
Eventually you gasp for breath.

In July and August 2018, Sound & Colour Production researched and developed their latest performance work during the Percolate Residency at Dance Limerick.
During the two week residency, musician and composer Kavall (GER), dance artist Matt Cleary (UK) and me (Stephanie Scheubeck) researched intensely into the relationship between sound, movement and embodiment by going through cycles of receiving sensory stimuli and expressing them: sound, listening, drawing, moving and resonating in stillness influenced one another in a creative exchange.
Passing fluently from task into the other, we took the sensory information from one medium to the other so that they influenced each other mutually. Core to our research were the work with the concurrents (the synaesthetic perceptions), space, (sound) waves, density, kinaesthetic resonance.
Thanks to the great technical support and equipment from Dance Limerick we were able to deepen the explorations on coloured light and the multi-layering of visual stimuli (light, shadows, film, live stream) with the two projectors and the video camera provided. For the showing, we transformed the white dance studio into a gallery space: The projections scanned the site, it’s corners, walls and cracks. The audience as well as performers were immersed by Kavall’s soundscape, by the coloured light of the projections that flooded the space and by the physicality of the dance that spread through the whole space.
Influences of Ireland-Clare-Limerick
We were welcomed warm heartedly during our stay in Ireland: Lovely conversations and music making with our host, dinner invitations by fellow artists, intense conversations and stimulating artistic exchanges.
Our generous host took us to Kilkee on the weekend and some of the footage I used for the projections was filmed on the travel. The colorful flowers on Limerick’s bridges served as base for footage for immersive projections in the showing.
After the residency we followed an invitation by artist Maria Kerin and stayed with her in Ennistymon for a residency and a sharing with Ankor, a platform for European interdisciplinary movement-based arts practice sharing. We connected with inspiring artists from various disciplines, shared our work and were impressed by the strong community of artists in that part of Ireland.
I feel enriched and artistically as well as personally nourished from the stay Ireland and from the work during the Percolate Residency in Limerick. An opportunity I can highly recommend to fellow artists!

About Sound & Colour Production
Sound & Colour Production centres around the fascinating and rare neurological phenomenon called ’synaesthesia’, where the trigger of one sense simultaneously and involuntarily triggers a second sense and as a result the senses blend. I, Stephanie Scheubeck, a dance artist, filmmaker and synaesthete, started the research into the relationship between synaesthesia, embodiment and dance during my MA in Dance at Bath Spa University (UK) in 2016. The research is driven by the interweaving of my synaesthesia and my art making as well as by the aim to make this fascinating phenomenon know to a wider public.
By now, the production feeds into and is nourished by three strands:
- Artistic project - live performance
- Workshops and discussions
Sound & Colour gives insight into synaesthesia as an example for the variety of perception that is inherent in us as human beings. It highlights the beauty and enrichment diversity holds for communities and for society while offering a somatic, felt experience to the audience and a space for discussing diversity. With its qualitative, embodied research into synaesthesia, Sound & Colour aims to contribute to an integral understanding of this phenomenon, which is still predominantly quantitatively researched.
Through a combination of performance platforms, residency opportunities, master classes, talks and lectures, Dance Limerick will advocate for artistic dialogue and exchange. In collaboration with dance artists across a range of practices, Dance Limerick will promote the creation of new and innovative work and will devise programmes of access, engagement and participation for the wider public.
