Kátia Manjate in residence
Katia Manjate began her training in traditional dance in 1994. In 2003, she deepened her studies in contemporary dance through the 1st Choreographic Development Workshop organized by Culturarte (Mozambique) and Danças na Cidade (Portugal). Since then, she has received professional training from several national and international choreographers, including Boyzie Cekwana and Desire Davids (South Africa), David Zambrano (Venezuela), Matt Vooter (Netherlands), Francisco Camacho (Portugal), Gilles Jobin (Switzerland), Faustin Linyenkula (DR Congo), Olivier Dubois and Victor de Oliveira (France), Maria Helena Pinto, Augusto Cuvilas, and Panaibra Canda (Mozambique), among others.
Her most notable works include Casa, in collaboration with Judith Olivia Namantenansoa (MG) and Walter Zand (MZ); Fragiland, co-created as part of the transcontinental project Shifting Realities (Germany – Senegal); Sexo (con)Sentido premiered in 2020 at the Linha de Fuga program (PT); Life in Numbers, developed in collaboration with German choreographer Anna Till, presented in Germany and Mozambique; Body in Transit, with Iranian visual artist Farzane Ghadyanloo; Ballads of the Gods, premiered at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center; KREISEN, a piece by the German producer Situations Productions, where she performed as an interpreter.
During her residency, Kátia aims to explore interdisciplinary models and frameworks for presenting contemporary dance. Her research considers how cultural forms navigate through time and space, blending stories, sciences, and aesthetics in innovative ways to generate new insights on history, identity, and cultural expression.
Kátia’s work is multilayered, combining traditional and historical elements with contemporary and futuristic ideas. This time in Ireland will be an opportunity for her to deepen her ideas, collaborate with other artists and bring new perspectives and energy back to her community, contributing to cultural and social dialogue.
Kátia will be offering a professional class on Friday 12 December – more information and booking here
She will also teach an inclusive youth dance workshop on Wednesday 3 December – more info here
