PROFESSIONAL CLASS WITH Angie Smalis
Book : Wed 02 Feb '22 to Wed 23 Feb '22

Part of Dance Limerick's New Series of Professional Classes curated by Dance Limerick and Irish World Academy of Music and Dance Associate Artist, Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín.

Angie invites participants to join me in her ongoing exploration of the narrative potential of dance. Her personal interest in memories, stories, people and places lies in the ethical imagination that every story asks for, within which the limitations of “persona” can be explored and provoked. Through improv tasks, Angie will guide participants to develop and create a series of movement studies, generated by their own idiosyncrasies.

About Angie Smalis

Angie trained and worked  professionally as a dance artist in Greece before moving to Vienna, Austria in 2001 to join the Viennese Opera (VolksOper Wien). She relocated to Limerick in 2003 to join Daghdha Dance Company. She is an independent contemporary dance artist, Artistic Director of Limerick Youth Theatre, and Founder and Director of Patterns Dance Collective, a group of dance artists with intellectual disabilities under the auspices of Avista, Limerick.

Angie’s work focuses on developing a methodology to express contemporary and universal concerns, through a character/place-based dance vocabulary, in collaboration with American Performing Artist, Colin Gee.

Angie proposes a new use of narrative in character-based dance and an opportunity to engage with novelistic storytelling technique, through movement.  Her interest in the narrative potential of dance is to explore how the limitations of “persona” can be shown and to provoke the kind of ethical imagination a story addresses. Recent research into “performed persona” and place-based narrative has explored public and private morality, and beauty as an expression of the sublime.

Z(ero)ing into Improvisation

Part of Dance Limerick's New Series of Professional Classes curated by Dance Limerick and Irish World Academy of Music and Dance Associate Artist, Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín.

The workshop is based on an approach to movement research, improvisation and performance called z(ero)ing. It comprises a series of improvisational tasks which provide for movement to be explored from a number of different angles:‘directional spatial awareness’ (sensing Space as a supportive surface) and ‘pre-movement impulses’ (attuning to breath and gravity). The notion of collective finding is central to z(ero)ing. We research together and discuss our ‘findings’. This feedback loop allows us to better understand what is going on and to further explore how the tasks might provide for the energy of ‘thing’ which is also ‘no-thing’ to be harnessed.

About Mary

Mary Nunan is a dance artist. Throughout her career she has created a substantial body of choreographies that have been presented at national and international venues. Her professional career began when she joined Dublin Contemporary Dance Theatre (1981-86). She was founder Artistic Director of Daghdha Dance Company (1988-1999) and Course Director of the MA Contemporary Dance Performance, UL (1999-2016). Since 2016 she has continued to work as an independent artist: choreographer, performer, mentor, writer. Her practice, in all its manifestations, is driven by her deep curiosity and ongoing investigation into movement as a unique way of knowing and being-in-the world.
