As part of his residency with Angie Smalis, Colin Gee will host an innovative workshop which offers an overview of the creation and development process of original performance work, from concept to presentation, with a focus being placed on the creation of character.
The workshop will cover physical performance technique, ways to approach character (which will be broadly defined), and perspectives on ways to develop and structure the participant’s material. The creation of material will respond to each participant’s own process and material, providing tools for, and seeking to develop the process through new ideas, writing and visual sources. Colin will draw from the Lecoq school training and from his own work ranging from Cirque du Soleil, film (cinematic realism), non-narrative movement-based characterisation, and "characters" based on art historical imagery.
Participants should have a project they are considering for further development: a character, a monologue, a movement piece, a clown number, a choreography, a performance art piece, etc. These will be developed during the workshop and reviewed individually by Colin, and within the group.
Skill level: This workshop is designed for performers interested in deepening an understanding of character and developing performance material. Participants must be over 16 years and are asked to bring a project at an early developmental stage to discuss and develop further.
